What is boiler turndown ratio?
For boiler heating systems, the turndown ratio refers to the ability of the boiler to operate at lower output levels compared to its maximum capacity. “Turndown” describes the ratio between the boiler's highest and lowest firing rates. For example, if a home boiler has a turndown ratio of 15:1 it means that the boiler can modulate heat output down to one-fifteenth (less than 7%) of its maximum output.
A higher turndown ratio is a big advantage because it provides home heating with much more flexibility, comfort and efficiency. With a higher turndown ratio, a boiler can:
- More accurately meet the heat demand of the home
- Use energy more efficiently
- Avoid frequent on/off cycling (which wastes energy and increases wear & tear on the system)
- Operate at lower firing rates when heat demand is low (for example during mild weather)
Turndown ratio is an important feature of boiler heating systems because it allows for more precise control and directly relates to efficiency, performance, and responsiveness to heating demands.
Navien residential boilers have up to a 15:1 turndown ratio. In comparison, traditional boilers have a turndown ratio ranging from 4:1 to 6:1.

NAVIEN HEATING BOILER BENEFITS
Conventional Boilers Lose Heat
Condensing Boilers Retain It
Reduce energy costs and greenhouse gasses with Navien high- efficiency condensing boilers. Condensing boilers operate more efficiently than traditional boilers because they have a stainless steel heat exchanger that captures heat from exhaust vapor and transfers the recovered heat energy to the water circulating in the hydronic heating system.
Navien Home Boiler Applications
Space-saving design occupies up to 80% less space than a traditional floor standing boiler.
Navien gas boilers are compatible with:
- Radiators
- Baseboard radiators
- Radiant floor heating systems
- Fan-coil units
- Hydronic air handlers
Protect the Environment as You Heat Your Home
Navien primary condensing stainless steel heat exchangers recover extra heat that would be lost in non-condensing boilers to reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. This also keeps exhaust temperatures very low — so low that economical Schedule 40 PVC pipe can be used for venting in almost all applications.
